As I sit here in my office at the “world headquarters” of Andi on Adventure, I look across the ancient courtyard to the remnants of an old convent. The clock tower strikes the time at the top of the hour and another distant clock soon follows. It’s a million miles away from my previous office at the world headquarters of Avantair, a fractional airline based in St. Petersburg, Florida. My office there had a view of airplanes and the skyline of Tampa in the distance.

So, how did I travel this vast distance – from the world of private aviation to the world of Nice, France filled with ancient monasteries and fascinating history?

Well, the journey started in the Fall of 2012 when a part fell off an airplane…

Yeah, really. It was a just small part located on the tail, but the crew didn’t notice and flew three legs before it was discovered. When the FAA heard, it was a big deal. They grounded the entire fleet and launched an investigation. I was working in sales at the time and had a hard time selling airplanes that couldn’t fly.

By late 2012, I sensed the end of Avantair was drawing near so I began to make my exit strategy. I had always dreamed of living in Asia and decided to focus on making that dream a reality.  I didn’t know where and I wasn’t sure how, but I knew I didn’t ever want to regret NOT trying something new.

Where to? Thailand? India? Vietnam? The possibilities were endless.

I settled on Hanoi, Vietnam and spent three months as a volunteer teaching English to high school students. Although I had a total fear of public speaking, I knew I had to get over it and teach to survive. Speaking English was my only real skill!

It wasn’t an easy road, but through all the stress, fear, and uncertainty of starting over, I hung on to the wise words of Steve Jobs:

“…you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something — your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever.”

I followed my intuition and trusted that it would all work out in the end. After turning down job offers from China, I considered Korea, Cambodia, and Thailand before I stumbled into my new life in Taiwan.

Life in Taiwan was good,  but after four years I knew it was time to move on to a new life – in Nice, France!

What’s my purpose?

Encouraging adventure! I’ll share travel information, travel experiences, and tales of expat life starting over again in France. I hope my stories will entertain you and inspire you to get out there and embrace the adventure of life!
