It’s that time of year again when the shopping madness begins and you lose your mind trying to find something perfect – perfect travel gifts. And then you lose your cool stuck in the dreaded Black Friday crowds – the annual tradition when Americans spend the day giving thanks for “stuff”, stuff themselves with too much turkey, and then go shopping for more “stuff”.
So, before subjecting yourself to another year of shopping madness and indecision, here are some great gift and gadget suggestions for any travel addicts on your shopping list. If you aren’t able to give your loved one a luxury trip, think about travel gadgets and “stuff”. This list includes things I have and highly recommend, gifts I’ve given, and others that I’ve researched because I need them! Nothing (except the drone) costs more than $55.00.
Many world travelers have visited developing countries and are aware of the great need in many of these areas, so consider giving the gift of a donation to a worthy cause. Global Giving.org makes it easy, with the largest crowdfunding community connecting nonprofits and donors around the world.
Their website gives you many options beginning with “they choose” to let the recipient choose a cause that matters to them. Otherwise, “you choose” allows you to pick a cause and make a donation in their name.
The projects are sorted by “country” and “cause”, making it easy to scroll through your options. They also offer helpful suggestions with their “Popular Projects” list as well as a “Project of the Month Club”.
So, for any world travelers on your gift-buying list who are living a minimalist lifestyle and don’t need any more “stuff”, consider Global Giving.org.
But, if you really DO need to buy things, here are some helpful suggestions for travel addicts. Most are available on Amazon.com to make your gift buying hassle-free.
No malls, crowds, or Black Friday madness!
Puffy Packable Jacket – ($37.99) Packing for cold weather travel is a challenge. I’ll be packing light for winter in Europe and already bought one of these for myself.
Bluetooth Speaker – ($24.99) Portable, water- and dust-resistant. Take your music on the road! I take this to my patio almost every night.
Bluetooth Noise Canceling Headphones – ($54.99) Listen to the music, not the screaming children kicking the seat behind you!
Mini Travel Power Strip – ($16.99) Perfect for travelers who need to work remotely. This one includes 3 outlets plus 3 USB charging ports, allowing you to charge all your gadgets at once.
Portable Power Bank – ($32.90) External battery charger works with all kinds of phones and gadgets. Great for keeping your phone charged while on the road. (Your phone is your life!)
Mini LED Flashlight – ($7.99) So you don’t get lost in the dark. Handy for unexpected power outages when traveling in less developed areas or for exploring dark caves!
Foldable Backpack – ($19.99) I have two of these and love them both equally! They’re lightweight yet durable and fold into a small pouch.
Rolling Duffel Bag – ($39.95) Perfect for those times when it’s just impossible to pack light.
Packing Cubes – ($24.88) Keep your stuff neat and organized.
Dry Bag – ($15.99) I bought one of these in the Philippines and I love it! It’s ideal for beaching or boating and will keep your stuff dry.
Mini Tripod – ($24.85) Small and packable, and handy for getting beautiful night shots.
(Drones are a unique gift but not an easy thing to purchase. See this Drone Buying Guide for tips.)
Kindle – ($49.99) Real books just weigh you down. A Kindle provides unlimited entertainment options for long, boring flights.
E-Books – (varied prices) Travel books and travel memoirs to inspire travel dreams!
Adult Coloring Books – ($5.99) The creative stimulation they provide is considered good therapy. (I bought one for my Mother last Christmas, however, I’m not completely sure that it’s worked.)
Music Subscription – Music helps ease the pain of long flights. Consider giving the gift of a subscription to Spotify or I-Tunes.
Microfiber Towel Set – ($19.90) Quick drying and perfect for the beach or for those times when you end up in a cheap and dingy hotel! I have a small one but highly recommend getting the set that includes a full-size bath towel. Useful for hot yoga too.
Collapsible Water Bottle – ($19.95) Collapses small enough to fit in your pocket. Pretty cool!
