The Bucket List is continuously being revised and updated! See recent article “Bucket List Guilt – and why I’m one of the lucky ones.”
Infamous for its government’s focus on “Gross National Happiness”, Bhutan has been on my list for many years. I’ve always been drawn to the peacefulness of the Buddhist people and the incredible scenery of the Himalayas. Unfortunately, in order to preserve the tranquility of the country and avoid being overrun by tourists, the government has strict tourism restrictions requiring visitors to spend a lot of money, a minimum of $200USD/day during low season. That’s why I haven’t been there…yet.
Ever since the first time I saw “Casablanca”, I’ve been fascinated by Morocco. It seems so exotic, mysterious, and completely different from Zumbrota, Minnesota. I planned a trip there and even bought the Lonely Planet book, but then 9/11 happened and it didn’t seem like a good time to go there. Hopefully 2017 will be the year!
I’ve actually been to the border twice. The first time was on a “Visa Run” from Chiang Mai, Thailand in order to extend the length of my stay in Thailand. The second time was very recently, when I went hiking from Ban Rak Thai, a small town right on the border between Thailand and Myanmar. The gate was open and the guard shack was empty, so I walked on through and went for a little hike. Next time I hope to enter the country legally and see some of the sites; pagodas in Bagan, views of Inle Lake, and the road to Mandalay. (This adventure is tentatively planned for October, 2016.)
I’ve been to Nepal twice and love the peace of the Himalayas and the gentleness of the Buddhist people. Tibet is a fascinating country (territory) with and interesting history- the exile of the Dalai Lama and the fight for independence from China. It’s a long, bumpy drive from Kathmandu but I’m sure it’ll be well worth it! There is also the option of taking the train from Shanghai.
My world-travelling niece went to South Africa on a trip with her university class and absolutely loved it, and I loved her photos. My next door neighbor in Taiwan is from Cape Town, South Africa so I’ve been learning more about the country. It also seems that South Africa is on most “must see” lists so I’ve recently added it to my bucket list.
Iceland – I saw “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty” and am now inspired to visit Iceland.
Prague – Friends have been to Prague and rave about the beauty of this city.
Barcelona – A recent viewing of a rerun episode of “The Bachelorette” showcased the beauty and romance of this city. (Sadly, I’ll probably go to Barcelona alone!)
Argentina – I really want to see Iguazu Falls after seeing it in photos! Stunning!
Maldives – Since moving to Asia, I’ve met more people who’ve traveled to this amazing island. Seems like it’s usually a honeymoon trip, but whatever.
More Bucket List adventures coming soon!
